Engagement Ring Etiquette: Dos and Don’ts

Love may not be material, but when it comes to the traditional act of engagement, there is one material symbol that has been held paramount: the engagement ring. As an enduring representation of love, commitment, and union, engagement rings carry a significance that extends beyond their dazzling appearance.

The practice of giving an engagement ring dates back to Ancient Egypt where rings were worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, believed to contain the “vena amoris” or “vein of love” which is directly linked to the heart. Over time, societies across the globe have embraced this tradition, adding their own cultural nuances and styles.

In the world of modern matrimony, the engagement ring is typically presented as a proposal of marriage. From simple bands to solitaire diamonds, cluster settings to ornate designs, women and men alike have come to don these tokens of promise, each ring bearing its own story of love and commitment.

Choosing the right engagement ring is a significant decision – often it’s seen as a reflection of one’s understanding of their partner’s taste and style. While the ‘three-month salary’ rule was once considered the go-to guide for purchasing an engagement ring, today’s couples are rewriting the rules. Many are prioritizing personal significance and style over size and cost, creating a market ripe with diverse offerings to suit every budget and preference.

“The cost of an engagement ring can vary greatly,” says Kevin Lafond, a 3rd generation jewelery designer and owner of Lafond’s Fine Jewelers. “We have seen significant changes in purchasing trends in recent years. Couples are opting for uniquely designed pieces or gemstones other than diamonds to have something ‘one-of-a-kind’. Today it’s all about personal expression and showcasing your story of love and commitment.”

Diamonds, traditionally the centerpiece of engagement rings, are also seeing some competition from other precious gems such as sapphires, rubies, and emeralds. Meanwhile, alternatives like moissanite and cubic zirconia are becoming increasingly popular for those in search of an affordable yet sparkling option.

Engagement rings not only trend by stone but also by design. Vintage-inspired rings have seen a resurgence, with art deco and Victorian styles catching the eye of many modern brides. At the same time, minimalist designs with solitaire settings continue to be a timeless choice.

Regardless of the style or stone, engagement rings hold a deep emotional value for couples. Often passed down through generations as treasured family heirlooms, these rings carry a legacy of love.

Marie Hughes, a newly engaged Portland resident, shares the sentiment behind her ring, “It’s more than just a beautiful piece of jewelry. It’s my fiancé’s love for me made tangible. Each time I look at it, I’m reminded of his proposal, and how excited we are to start this new chapter together.”

As an enduring symbol of love, each engagement ring tells a unique story – a sparkling visual representation of shared promises and dreams. While trends and styles may evolve with time, the inherent significance and sentimentality of the ring remains. The engagement ring is a testament to love’s endurance, reminding us that while love is an emotion that cannot be seen or touched, it can certainly be celebrated with a beautiful, shining artifact of commitment.
